Cops are Now Experiencing What Many Teachers have been for Years
I saw this article https://nypost.com/2019/07/23/video-shows-uniformed-nypd-cop-harassed-on-subway-by-foul-mouthed-rider/?utm_campaign=iosapp&utm_source=pasteboard_app and interaction tonight and couldn’t help but think of the many personal experiences I’ve had as a dean and teacher. Many of our students interact with school staff the exact same way this young thug did with the cop - except with an audience of other students, staff and security agents watching the show. A cell phone is usually recording the incident, which is a marked attempt at intimidation and/or provocation. The results are the rubber room/ATR pool/termination and/or arrest for the teacher if he/she loses her/his cool. If you walk away, look away, say nothing or try to calm things down you're looked at as being ‘soft’. This has a 50-50 chance of escalating into a physical attack on the staff member. What happens to the student? A parent is called and the student usually acts out the same scene again to the delight of the parent with no consequences whatsoever. It seems the NYCDOE discipline code is now the code for NYPD.
