Meandering Thoughts Summer 2019

Baby, it’s hot outside! I haven’t looked at the blogs recently and read them all this morning. They are all depressing and for the most part correct. I see big potential changes coming and they aren’t good. Let’s discuss it.

Regents Exams - The elimination of these exams in NYC public schools is a public announcement that our students can not pass them. Thus, the one objective proof that a NYCDOE diploma is meaningful is removed. Those diplomas are now the equivalent of the most expensive toilet paper in the world. How much does it cost us to educate one student from pre-k to 12th grade? At an average of 17K a year per student that piece of toilet paper costs $238,000. Many of our graduates are functionally illiterate, socially ignorant and entitled. How did this happen? Students are no longer taught by teachers. Teachers are facilitators over small self learning groups. Nice idea but it assumes a base knowledge that just isn’t there. It’s the blind leading the blind. These kids are promoted continually until they graduate - no matter what. Even lack of attendance can’t be held against them. These students are also socially ignorant because our schools are almost completely segregated. I taught thousands of students over my 28 plus years and I never taught a White kid. This creates and perpetuates the worst kind of stereotypes against other groups and helps substantiate hate against minorities. Then there’s the entitlement. Students are openly selling and using drugs, bullying those they perceive as weak (including staff), sexually harassing and assaulting classmates and teachers, and are carrying weapons on a daily basis. What’s being done about it? Absolutely nothing. This impresses a false sense of security and entitlement onto students, who will come into a hard ‘Common’  core beat down when they go out into society. Society expects us to civilize our students and the DOE is purposefully rejecting its obligation. Does the typical New Yorker want to pay 238K for a student that is fast tracked to prison, fast food cashier or the grave yard? What choice will we have? Charter schools will give the same results - a diploma at a fraction of the cost. Now with the proof of a meaningful diploma removed, the public and politicians will make the pragmatic choice and embrace Eva and her hordes of money hungry demons. It’s a no brainer. The savings will be astronomical. No more high salaried teachers and administrators. No more pensions. DeBlasio is a putz, but he’s our friend. He’s only in office because of a knee jerk reaction to Trump’s election. Everyone now seems to hate Bill, especially those that voted for him. A progressive successor would only be voted in under similar circumstances. Think that out to its logical, but sickening conclusion, if you despise Trump as I do.

Stay cool!
