Spring Break Frequently Asked Questions

From one of my close buddies at the UFT:

Q: What kind of compensation are we getting for being forced to work during spring break?
A: If you are a UFT-represented employee of the DOE, and you work the regular school year, you will receive 4 CAR days for now. If you work a 12-month year, meaning you were expected to work the week of 4/13-4/17/20 even before the Governor’s Executive Order, you will receive either 2 CAR days or 2 annual leave days, whatever you choose. The UFT can and will pursue further compensation going forward, either through bargaining or through the courts if necessary.
Q: What does this mean for Religious Observance days?
A: If you need to take Religious Observance days, you can. If you use 4 days during the Spring Break period, then you will neither gain nor lose any CAR days. You will end Spring Break with the same number of CAR days with which you began Spring Break. If you use 1 day during this time, you will have a net increase of 3 days.
Q: Do we still earn the regularly scheduled CAR day on 4/16/20?
A: Yes, the 4 CAR days are in addition to the CAR day you earn on the 16th.
Q: I’ve already used 3 personal business days this year. Can I still use a CAR day for religious observance?
A: Yes, you can use CAR days beyond the 3 you are usually entitled to use. In fact, that is the only way that you can take Religious Observance at this time. You cannot be charged the cost of a substitute during Spring Break.
Q: I recently had a baby and am using CAR days prior to Parental Leave. How does this affect me?
A: It doesn’t. If you are using CAR days as part of the maternity portion of parental leave or as part of a restoration of health leave, you will neither earn nor will you be charged CAR days during Spring Break.
Q. How do I apply to take a religious observance day?
A. Fill out the OP201 form (available on the UFT website) and send to your timekeeper
