Poetry and Current Events, Autumn 2019

I’ve been reading a lot of poetry and also contemplating our current state of affairs. Two seemingly dissimilar bodies of fiction, but together they train the mind towards reality. Both are depressing and need to be carefully examined. I spent last night reading and interpreting poems I had long forgotten or never knew existed. Two Corbies https://m.poemhunter.com/poem/the-twa-corbies/, The Wife’s Lament, The Wanderer http://shslboyd.pbworks.com/f/The+Wanderer+text.pdf, To An Athlete Dying Young by A.E. Houseman and the lyrics to  The Battle Hymn of the Republic https://music.mybuddyben.com/the-battle-hymn-of-the-republic-lyrics-only/by Julia Ward Howe. The Wanderer, for me, was the most powerful, but the Houseman poem was the most poignant. The most interesting in regards to current events is the The Battle Hymn of the Republic (not Republican)  - it mixes violence and Christianity into a heart thumping war cry. After reading those works my mind fell onto several seemingly unrelated events in much the same way those poems were thrown together.  Jeffery Epstein’s death (Two Corbies), the Trump impeachment hearings (The Battle Hymn of the Republic) and Mike Bloomberg’s presidential campaign (The Wanderer).

Let’s look at each - Jeffery Epstein - billionaire, sex addict, friend to the politically powerful and serial winner in everything. The media and the powers that be (i.e.,William Barr) would have us believe this man killed himself. The autopsy contradicts that, his meeting with friends and lawyers belie it and the complete break down of all safeguards in a high security prison for a guest of incredible notoriety prove it. Why is William Barr saying it was suicide as a side bar to the impeachment hearings? Who’s behind Epstein’s murder?  Why is the media rapidly ignoring the Epstein case as a murder case (while branding him a pedophile)?

Well that would be our next work, The Battle Hymn of the Republic, also known as the impeachment hearings. These hearings are seen as a battle by both sides - each is sure that G-d is on their side. What are these hearings about? Propaganda ( like our afore mentioned lyrics) for each side and the moral victory that each will claim. What are these hearings in reality?  A complete waste of time. Everyone knows Trump had his quid pro quo, but will it result in his removal?  Of course not. People that support Trump don’t care what he does and will vote for him no matter what or what  Nancy says.  The whole thing is a farce - as is Trump’s whole presidency. Most people like to be entertained, so they don’t mind.

Some see this very differently - namely Mike Bloomberg. The Wanderer is a very old Anglo Saxon poem of extreme perseverance. Bloomberg is The Wanderer - he’s  making pragmatic decisions concerning his past and future. He very well could be the Democratic Party’s nominee. He is the real deal. He is a financial genius, incredibly wealthy and a true negotiator. He’s smart enough not to get into a fight that he can’t win. Make no mistake, he intends on becoming the next President of the United States. Those who think that he has no chance are severely underestimating him - the same way they did with Trump. Bloomberg announced today he is running for the presidency and that should give many pause and cause for real concern.

  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

  3. I agree with you both. Unfortunately I'm starting to argue with Dems who don't know anything of his legacy of pain in NYC. They are also touting him as leader in the climate crisis and as someone who keeps the welfare of the citizenry paramount. I starting to worry a little.
